How to make a resume:Get Organized
Create a file for any supporting documentation you gather as you might need it in the interview process. Create a folder for each of the following categories.
Employment History
Make a list of all of your previous employers for the last 10 years. Research current address and telephone numbers of the companies you worked for. Determine to the best of your ability your start and end dates. On your list include the amount of money you made in each position. If you received raises, include the beginning and ending salary on your list. This information will help you to make a resume quickly and efficiently. Describe the type of work you did, equipment you used, management opportunities and the number of employees you supervised if any.
Skills and Qualifications
Make a list of your skills and qualifications. Divide this list into relevant categories that apply to the type of work you are looking for. For example, make a list of computer programs you have mastered, machines, vehicles and tools you have learned to use, office skills, etc.
Education
Make a list of degrees you have earned, training you have received, workshops you have attended and certificates for trade course work. When you make a resume be sure to include dates, the full name of the awarding institution, and contact information.
Honors and Awards
Make a list of honors and awards you have received. Again, be sure to write down the full name of the awarding organization or institution, dates, and contact information.
Volunteerism and Civic Service
List all volunteer positions you have held in your community, church, etc. Include board positions you have held and other positions that show leadership.
Search your soul to determine exactly what your goals are in this job search. Dont be vague. In this search, ask yourself what you can do for an employer, what you want to accomplish in the process and how you want to develop professionally.
There are many resume programs available online that will allow you to plug in your information. Do an Internet search for a free resume program that will allow you to create a resume in a common word processing program. Fill in all specific information. Once the software creates your resume, you can personalize it on your computer.
Keep your resume to a length of two pages or less. Print it on high-quality paper and always include a personal cover letter.
